History of Midland

Midland, originally known as Midland Junction, has one of the richest industrial histories of any Perth suburb. The area was established in the 1890s at the junction of the Eastern Railway and the Great Eastern Highway, making it a vital transport hub for the Eastern Goldfields. The Midland Railway Workshops, established in 1904, became one of Western Australia’s largest employers for nearly a century, manufacturing and maintaining locomotives and rolling stock. At its peak, the workshops employed over 3,000 workers and were the heart of the community. The workshops closed in 1994, but the heritage-listed buildings remain as a testament to Midland’s industrial past. In recent decades, Midland has undergone significant urban renewal, with the old workshop site being reimagined as a cultural and community precinct, while St John of God Midland Public Hospital and expanded retail facilities have revitalised the town centre.
