History of Fremantle

Fremantle, affectionately known as Freo, was established in 1829 as the port town of the Swan River Colony. Named after Captain Charles Fremantle who claimed the west coast for the British Crown, the town grew around its natural harbour at the mouth of the Swan River. The construction of Fremantle Prison by convict labour between 1851 and 1859 left an enduring landmark that is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 1890s gold rush brought Italian, Greek, and Yugoslav immigrants who shaped Fremantle’s distinctive multicultural character, particularly around the fishing harbour. Engineer C.Y. O’Connor’s ambitious harbour works in the 1890s created the inner harbour that made Fremantle one of Australia’s great trading ports. The 1987 America’s Cup defence put Fremantle on the world stage, triggering a heritage restoration boom that preserved its Victorian and Edwardian streetscapes. The Fremantle Markets, operating since 1897, remain a beloved institution today.
