
History of Cannington
Cannington is one of Perth’s oldest suburban settlements, with European farming activity dating back to the 1840s. The suburb was named after Cannington in Somerset, England, by early settlers who established orchards and market gardens along the Canning River. The arrival of the Armadale railway line in the 1890s connected Cannington to Perth and spurred residential growth. The Cannington Agricultural Show, first held in 1894, became a beloved community event that continued for over a century. In the mid-20th century, Cannington evolved into a major commercial centre with the development of Carousel Shopping Centre (originally Cannington Court), which became one of the largest shopping complexes south of the river. The Cecil Andrews Senior High School, named after a prominent local identity, has served the community since 1957. Today, Cannington is recognised as a strategic metropolitan centre in Perth’s south-east, with ongoing urban infill and improved public transport connections.
