History of Armadale

Armadale’s story begins with the Noongar people who inhabited the foothills of the Darling Scarp for thousands of years. European settlement came in the 1830s when timber cutters and farmers moved into the area. The suburb was named after Armadale Castle in the Scottish Highlands by early settler Henry Wyndham. The arrival of the South Eastern Railway in 1893 was a turning point, connecting Armadale to Perth and establishing it as a gateway to the Darling Range. The railway brought orchardists and market gardeners who supplied Perth with fresh produce. Throughout the 20th century, Armadale evolved from a semi-rural town into a significant suburban centre, with the establishment of schools, shopping facilities, and community services. Today, Armadale retains its connection to the Perth Hills while serving as a growing residential hub in Perth’s south-east corridor.
