History of Subiaco

Subiaco’s origins date to the 1850s when Benedictine monks from Subiaco in Italy established a monastery in the area, giving the suburb its distinctive name. The suburb developed in the 1890s with the extension of the Perth-Fremantle railway, which included a station at Subiaco. The famous Subiaco Oval, opened in 1908, became the spiritual home of Australian Rules football in Western Australia, hosting WAFL and AFL matches for over a century before its final game in 2010. Rokeby Road emerged as one of Perth’s most fashionable shopping streets, lined with boutiques, cafes, and the iconic Regal Theatre (now Subiaco Arts Centre). The Subiaco Markets, housed in a heritage pavilion, were a beloved weekend destination for decades. In recent years, the redevelopment of the former Subiaco Oval site into Subi East has brought new apartments and public spaces, marking a new chapter in this storied suburb’s history.
