History of Joondalup

The Joondalup area has been home to the Noongar Whadjuk people for tens of thousands of years, with Lake Joondalup serving as an important meeting and ceremonial site. The name Joondalup is believed to derive from the Noongar word meaning a flat, swampy area near the lake. European settlers arrived in the 1830s, establishing farms and market gardens in the surrounding Wanneroo district. For over a century, the area remained largely rural until the Western Australian Government designated Joondalup as a planned satellite city in the 1970s. The Joondalup Development Corporation oversaw the transformation, and the suburb grew rapidly through the 1980s and 1990s with the opening of Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City, Edith Cowan University’s Joondalup campus, and the extension of the northern rail line in 1993. Today, Joondalup serves as the major commercial and civic hub for Perth’s northern corridor.
