History of East Perth

East Perth has undergone one of the most dramatic urban renewals in Australian history. In the early days of the Swan River Colony, the area along Claisebrook was used for farming and milling. By the late 19th century, East Perth had become a densely populated working-class neighbourhood, home to factories, railways, and the East Perth Power Station, which supplied electricity to the city from 1916 until 1981. The area also held significant Aboriginal heritage, with the old East Perth cemetery and the Swan Native and Half-Caste Mission. In the 1990s, the East Perth Redevelopment Authority transformed the neglected industrial area into a modern residential precinct, cleaning up contaminated land, restoring Claisebrook Cove as a waterfront village, and creating new parklands. The heritage-listed Royal Perth Hospital and WACA Ground remain important landmarks. Today, East Perth is a thriving inner-city neighbourhood combining modern apartments with preserved industrial heritage.
